Some topics we will be following this semester.

Below are some links to a few of the topics we will be following over the course of the semester. What issues do you think are the most important and why? What other important topics should we be paying attention to?

Old vids removed due to download size/time. If you are answering this question late, refer to issues raised Obamas speech from class or anything else you have read or seen in the news that you feel is important.

I think that at the moment, the economic crisis is the most important topic. This issue is the one that has the most significant and far-reaching impact on our lives. As President Obama said, jobs are being lost at an alarming rate, causing people to be unable to pay bills and to stop spending money, causing other companies to go down and more jobs to be lost, and continuing in a vicious cycle. For my family, the company that my parents work for is not doing well right now, and they are currently looking for new jobs, which is difficult with the state of the economy. They do not have great job security and are worried about being laid off and perhaps having to move. Also, specifically for my age group, it will affect college decisions – it would be a real shame for students not to be able to get the best education available to them just because it is not affordable. In addition, it will affect us when we leave school to join the workforce in a few years. I really hope that by that time, the economic condition will be improved to make it easier for us just starting out in the workforce.

Another issue that I think that is very important is investing in alternative energy sources, making vehicles and buildings more efficient, etc. I agree with President Obama that doing so would be extremely beneficial in that it creates much-needed jobs now, it decreases government spending, it decreases dependence on foreign oil, and it preserves the earth’s resources for future generations.

Also, the American healthcare system is in need of reform. Nearly 47 million Americans go without reliable healthcare insurance, and the system is costly, outdated, and inefficient. They still rely on paper records and far too many mistakes are made as a result every year. It is extremely expensive; millions spend a large chunk of their salaries on healthcare. Renovating the system would provide more Americans with reliable healthcare and, going back to the economic condition, would save people money, which would allow them to put more into the economy.

The economic crisis should be one of if not the most important issues of the near future (and unfortunately, probably the not-so-near future). I do not believe that this one stimulus bill will be able to resolve this problem. As the president said, to stimulate the economy the government needs to give money to people who will spend it, and I do not believe there is a large enough group that won't save some of it because of economic conditions (contributing to a sort of death spiral). If the government wants to speed up the time our country is in recession and prevent depression, further legislation needs to be issued to help prevent self interested groups and individuals, such as CEOs, from making decisions that may be harming others. I think that this topic is probably the most important because it has or will directly affect more people that any other topic likely will. I also believe that virtually every other controversial topic that involves the US or its government is directly tied into this economic situation.

Another extremely important topic is that of energy. This encompasses oil, which also greatly encompasses the war in the Middle East. The US needs to fund the finding of an alternative energy source. Because of the state of the economy and the time it would take to earn back the investment, I do no think that improving efficiency of energy created by oil is as important. If an alternative were found, it would help create many jobs, would likely save many Americans money, would help suffocate the funds of our enemies in the middle east and Venezuela (which would help move up the date of complete extraction from the middle east that Tom Ricks places so far away), and create world demand for a US good, helping bring money into our country. Although probably less of a concern, at least at the moment, it would also help protect the environment.

I think that revisions to NAFTA are also essential in improving the economy. Revisions could help bring back much needed jobs to help the unemployment rate from reaching such high levels that President Obama fear. It would help make the US more of a production country rather than a consumer country, increasing the flow of money into instead of out from it.

Although there are many other issues of near equal importance, there is not room for them all in this one entry so I will leave them for discussion in the future.

I feel that the economic crisis is the most important topic we need to focus on at this time. It has already greatly affected my family, and if no attention is put to the matter, it will soon impact the many young students graduating in the next two years and getting ready for college. Right now my dad is struggling at his job at General Electric and many people are being laid off, so he is worried about being let go. Also, it will be very unfortunate for many students who have worked hard throughout high school and their parents whose jobs have gone downhill to not be able to afford college because of the financial issues at hand. From seeing the struggles taking place at my own home, and the possible effects this issue may have on students like me in the future(even after college), I worry that it will be hard to fix. I hope that the problem will be taken care of by then.

Along with the crash of the stock market, two other issues that I believe we should focus on are, the crash of the housing market, and the price of gas and oil increasing. Currently, many people are foreclosing on houses because they can’t afford to pay their mortgage. Also, the price of gas and oil are increasing and people are struggling to heat their houses and travel. These economic problems are affecting all of us, and action needs to be taken fast. The new bill in the process of being passed I think is a good start to “treating” the crisis, but I don’t feel it will solve everything.

I think that each and every issue that could be discussed during the semester somehow play into one another. For example, the rapid decline of the economy is not being helped by the money being spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. As was said in one of the videos, the wars could stretch out to 2015. There is even potential for a new war in Pakistan. That being said, it is difficult for me to decide on what I believe to be the most pressing issue, but surely the one that is getting the most media attention is the economy, and more specifically, the Stimulus Package. This is probably getting attention because it is a last- ditch effort to save the failing economy. Also, the issue of government involvement in business and the economy has two sides that are diametrically opposed to one another. Some are more towards the middle and believe that the government should intervene, but not in this way. Mostly, the Stimulus Package is so important because without a strong economy, there isn’t much credibility or power left to a nation.

I also think social issues are very important e.g. personal freedoms. While the bigwigs try to solve a flawed economy, people should focus on their rights. I don’t think the American people should let the economy take precedence over their personal freedoms.

In my opinion unemployment is a major issue that needs to be taken care of as of now. People have lost their jobs, and that is basically due to the economy. So in order to get people back to work, we need a stable economy. Unemployment is increasing every day, and people are losing their homes and families are suffering. As, of now the two most important issues that we need to focus on our getting people work and find a way to make our economy better. As said by President Obama this crisis is the worst economic crisis that our country has faced since The Great Depression. If we do not act fast, we could very well lead up to another historic Depression. This so called Recession needs to be taken care of before it gets out of hand.
These issues have not only affected employees but has taken a its toll on high school students who will soon be attending college. The tuition has increased enormously and loans are getting harder to obtain.

Another issue that needs to be looked at is in Iraq. Our troops need to come home, but its obviously not as easy and simple. Iraq is slowly stabilizing itself to become an independent nation and go towards a democracy. It will still take time, to end what was started during the Bush administration but once its ended I am sure that the economy will get better. For now, instead of just watching it get worse every second there needs to be a plan that we need to follow. That is exactly what President Obama has done. He has introduced a new plan, a solution to this crisis though there are some doubts about it, its better than not doing anything. I feel that this issue is by far more stronger and important than any other issue because a strong stable government symbolizes a secured nation.

The most important issue between the two is the economic crisis within our own borders. We need to maintain a steady course of financial certainty before we start to fund wars and other countries. So if the government can form public works and other programs to put people to work. More people will spend money which in turn fund companies and create more jobs as the business improves. So in conclusion focus on the homeland before helping others.

I agree with those who have said that the economic crisis is currently the most important issue facing our country. It really scares me to hear that our economy got so bad so quickly. I remember during the 2004 elections when people said they were supporting Bush, even though they didn't think the war was right, because the economy was doing well and it was benefitting them. When i took AP US History, the thing i noticed about history the most was that the economy was very important to the state of the nation, and that in most cases, when it was doing well, the country was thriving.

President Obama's press conference reiterated the fear that I will graduate from college and have no job opportunities. Because of this, I definitely hope the stimulus package works. I feel it is necessary to take measures to stop the crisis, and I hope we are taking the right measures, but we can't know for sure.

Also, Obama referred to Roosevelt and the New Deal, and the stimulus package seems to be modeled after that somewhat. But, I remember learning that what made the new deal successful was the launch into world war two which created many jobs. Maybe 'our WWII' can be the green revolution? Our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan do not seem to creating many jobs, so hopefully we won't have another international conflict.

I believe that the economy should be dealt with first, and then hopefully the government will have money to reform healthcare.

The issue that I think is the most important issue facing our nation today is the economic crisis. This is an incredibly important issue because when the economy goes downhill it has a ripple effect on our country. What started as some home foreclosures has turned into a recession so horrible that according to Barack Obama, is the worst economic crisis since the great depression. Now we have massive layoffs, numbering all the jobs in the state of Maine, and more. This has led to more layoffs where people are saving instead of buying. Massive companies have needed bailouts, such as our automakers and Wall Street. As our economy crashes around us, it has affected the entire world’s economy. For example, Iceland’s economy has completely crashed. This economic crisis has affected our entire nation, and everyone has felt the impact of it. As our economy withers, so does our way of life.
Also this issue is incredibly important because of our government’s response to it. Barack Obama has proposed a massive bail out plan, which also begs a new issue. Should our government approve a plan that asks for an unprecedented amount of money? How will we pay off this money when our country is a trillion dollars in debt from wars and uncontrolled spending? However, because the state of the economy is so dire in this country, I believe Obama’s bailout plan should be implemented. He calls for over 700 billion in aid, and also to fund social programs such as improving our country’s infrastructure. This plan, modeling after the New Deal will help make the internal fixes our country desperately needs. As Obama said in his press conference, this bailout will fix our crumbling bridges and roads, will help people afford college, and most importantly make our country a front runner in the effort to go green.
As the economy continues to decline, it makes the issue so much more important. Action is definitely needed, since in the past three months there have been an unprecedented amount of layoffs and foreclosures. With this bailout plan, we can hopefully help solve another huge issue, the fight to save our environment. With the economy in the front of everyone’s minds, it can be used to our advantage to help fix other vastly important issues. However once we save the economic crisis, our country will need to turn its attention to ending two wars, reforming the healthcare system, and foreign policy such as in the Middle East. There are so many issues facing this country today, it’s going to be extremely difficult for Obama and his cabinet and the government to find a workable solution to all of them.

I believe that the economic crisis is the most important topic that we will be covering this semester, as it will affect each of our lives the most. Although the war on Iraq and troops being deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq affects many people, the people who are affected most are the Americans who serve for our country and their friends and families who miss them. The economic crisis has a much bigger effect on almost all Americans every day. Americans who have invested money have lost a tremendous amount of their savings and investments, up to 40 or 50 percent. This affects everyday life because people have less to spend, and therefore have to choose different ways to spend money- perhaps not buying a coffee every day, and making it instead, or choosing a less expensive college to attend because it is harder to pay college tuition. Even rich people have to change their lifestyles- some rich people are hiding their expensive purchases or requesting plain bags from designer stores.
Another important topic that I believe we should address in civics this semester is health care. There are many Americans who do not have health care and are unable to take themselves or their kids to the doctor when they are sick. We should explore what we think is fair for the amount of health care given to Americans.
Lastly, I think we should explore the issue of gay rights, and the pros and cons of allowing gay marriage, which is likely to come up more as more young people accept the idea, and gay rights are more accepted by society.
There are many issues which are very important to discuss in civics, but the aforementioned ones, especially the economic crisis, are the ones which I believe are most important.

I believe that the present economic situation is an immediate priority for the U.S. at this time. In his press conference, President Obama spoke about the rapidly deteriorating economy and the alarm it has raised in the country. He cited examples such as Elkhart, Indiana, where the unemployment rate skyrocketed from 4.7 percent to 15.3 percent in the course of one year. I had kind of followed the economic crisis with a feeling of it can't happpen to me, but as I hear more about what is really going on, I grow more and more convinced that this is a serious problem that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. This is something that will affect each and every one of us, in paying for college and in finding a job in the near future. I have considered the possibility that I may have problems paying for college, or finding a job, and to be honest, like millions of other Americans, it's a problem I'd rather not have. I am glad Obama has chosen to devote a great part of his attention to it, because it is a troublesome situation for the country right now. His plan is to create up to 4 million new jobs and provide tax relief. I am hopeful that this will help, and I think it is a situation that needs to be followed.

Other issues that I also think are quite important now are healthcare and alternative energy sources. The world's supply of oil and other fuels is running out quickly and may be gone sooner than we think. I think it is never too early to begin looking into alternative solutions, because America needs to be ready when that day comes, so that we can continue to function. Finally, healthcare is another area that needs to be improved on. There are many people that do not have adequate healthcare that they can rely on. The system is also getting more and more inefficient. Healthcare reform is an issue that affects many people and that needs to be addressed. In summary, the economic crisis is the most pressing issue at hand, but healthcare and alternative energy sources are not far behind.

Personally to me, at this very moment the economic crisis is the most important issue taking place in our country. The whole situation is costing many people jobs and changes of current life situations. President Obama stated that jobs are being lost at an alarming rate. The increase of unemployment is creating difficult situations for many families throughout the U.S. The current recession will also cause future decisions and thinking to change. Money has to be taken into thought, forcing Americans to choose different ways of living. Family friends have talked about how their parents businesses are not doing so well at the moment. Companies we once saw striving, such as the auto industry, have to be bailed out by the government. If Obama’s stimulus plan does not succeed in beginning to revive our nation’s economy, we may all be in financial trouble in the near future.

I also see the Iraq War as an important topic. My feelings on this war are that our troops need to come home. It will take time, and I believe they have been putting forth an immense amount of effort in order to help stabilize the situation in Iraq. There have been great changes made in that country because of the young men and women who risked their lives. During the Bush Administration, the Iraq War was pushed very hard, and I think President Obama has created a well thought out plan for slowly receding from the Middle East. Many people are skeptical on whether or not the plans will follow through or not with getting our troops out. I believe strongly in the presidents promises, and time will tell what will actually occur.

Over the course of the semester I feel that the most important topic to be discussed is the current recession America is currently in and how it will be affecting major issues in everyday life, such as jobs, housing, stocks, and the debt we are in today. The economic crisis has greatly affected millions of American, and will probably soon be affecting me as well. Student loan was really never an issue nor in my thoughts when it came to college, but seeing that we are in a recession my family has been cutting back on spending just like other fellow Americans. I ld like to learn in class this year about how we are spending money we clearly do not have, and how we are able just to print the dollar with know value to it. This is a strong topic for me because president Obama seems like he is almost promising getting out of this ditch and being a prosperous America again, I feel instead of talking about it he should take the steps of showing this (all talk no action). The war in Iraq is another issue I worry about because I do not see us getting out of there as easy as Obama makes it sound. I feel like if we pull out our troops then there still will be terrorist attacks and then if we stay in Iraq we will never be able to pull out. America needs to stop trying to save everyone else and focus on our own “mother land” and get us out of the current economies state.
The environment is another topic that hits right at home with me and should be taken care of. We need to stop polluting the environment and use more safer and cleaner ways of energy. Solar and wind power energies are already being used in Canada and we need to take that into consideration that if we don’t try to create a safer environment for us and our children, children then we as the human race might not be here for that much longer.

Emi Boutsioulis said...

I feel the most important topic of discussion is the economic plan. A “good” economic plan is essential to getting out of this recession. The economic crisis affects Americans every day. Many people have been laid off from work due to recent budget cuts. While others have lost a lot of money in the stock market. As college is approaching quickly, I cannot help but wonder how my family will pay for college with our current economic state. I really hope to learn more about Obama’s economic plan over this semester because it will greatly influence my generation and those generations to come. I can only hope that it brings back the stability that we once had in our economy.
Other issues we need to pay attention to include the housing market and the economic stimulus package. The housing market has collapsed since this fall. The unregulated banking industry has caused millions of foreclosures. Foreclosures can be seen in all income levels, affecting a variety of Americans. The economic stimulus package is an important topic because it is a very controversial. Republicans and Democrats cannot seem to agree on it because it calls for an extreme amount of money to be spent by the government for: bailouts for the car industry, bank industry, and insurance industry, new infrastructure planning, etc. Although the goal of the stimulus package is to create new jobs some, question whether the country will truly benefit.

Erica said...

Although there are many important topics that can be discussed, the economic crisis is clearly the most important. It is my belief that before issues such as foreign relations can be addressed we must solve the issues that hit closest to home; and how much closer can we get than the economic difficulties that are becoming a steadily increasing problem as time passes? This topic affects almost all Americans, but especially impacts our generation. The actions the government take to address this issue now will affect college opportunities, job availability, and other economic necessities for our generation. Barrack Obama himself states that this economic crisis is “the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression”. How then can we address issues with other countries when our own country is in such a downward economic spiral? Over 3.6 million people have lost their jobs as a result of this economic crisis with more job loss and an increase in the unemployment rate in the foreseeable future. The drastic increase in housing foreclosures has also become a growing problem in this crisis. As more and more Americans lose their jobs, they lose the ability to keep their homes. They also, however, lose their all too essential health insurance. With medical costs being as high as they are, a loss of health care is a great loss to many Americans, who can’t afford to pay for or must spend a great deal on medical costs without it. The cost of health care can be in itself considered its own issue it has become such a problem in this country. However, the more people spend money on health insurance and medical costs the less money, they have to spend, or put back into the economy; thus adding to the steady downward spiral of our economy. Large corporations, especially in the automobile industry, are going bankrupt as our economy spirals farther and farther downward. The steady loss of such industries will cause further job loss and add to an already exponentially growing problem. With so many Americans being affect by so many economic difficulties, how can we pass over this issue to address others of less importance? It is therefore clear that the topic in the most need of being addressed is the economic crisis.
Another important issue that needs to be addressed is the continuation of our military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our presence in these countries is a costly one. The large amounts of money dedicated to military costs do nothing to help our already damaged economy. Money that could be used to improve our economy is being used to buy weapons to fight a war that has no hope of an end in the near future. The steady stream of money poured into our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan is money that if spent differently could in the long run help our economy by eliminating another cost our economy or government can not pay back. It is therefore clear that the continuation of our military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan is an issue that should also be discussed.

I believe, along with many of my classmates that the most important issue we will be studying is the economic crisis. It is scary to hear our new president saying that this is the worst economy trouble since the Great Depression. I remember learning all about the Great Depression in US history and how many people's lives changed. I can't even say that it has not gotten this bad because there are people out there suffering from hunger and thousands have lost their jobs.I am only seventeen and I am being affected by the economy crisis. My hours for my job have been cut back drastically, along with all of my co-workers due to the economy struggles.

I think that this issue should be dealth with first because it is affecting so many. A lot of families are worred about their jobs and the kids they need to provide for. It is tough to hear that our economy is doing so poorly, but it is important for us to learn. In just a few short years we will be off to college and we need a stable economy or else, we have no money to pay for it. In no means do I think that the economy is the only issue needed to be taken care of, but I feel as though it is by far most important. I hope that our country can stand by Obama and somehow get out of this mess

I believe that Barack Obama’s first press conference was well spoken and well thought out. He addressed many key issues and problems facing our country and all of these problems will play a role in shaping our nation’s decisions in the next four years. However I believe that certain issures should be brought to the forefront of our government and should be addressed. The major issue that I believe is the most important is the nation’s economic crisis. In his press conference President Obama discusses how rapidly our economy is declining and how much alarm it has caused across the country. I believe that this issue must be addressed with the utmost priority. This horrific economic crisis has not only hit some Americans, but all Americans. Every single person in the country is having a more difficult time in regards to their financial state.

It is a tough concept to grasp but all Americans must face it, we are in a major economic decline, the likes of which we have not seen since the Great Depression. This crisis will undoubtedly affect every citizen on the United States; it will affect the lower class greatly. The lower class will be unable to afford food and basic necessities, while the middle class will have a tough time being able to pay house bills and utility bills. This crisis even affects us in the little town of Cheshire, most of our parents will have trouble paying for college and after we graduate college we will have a tough time finding a decent job in this cutthroat job market.

I believe that is was necessary for President Obama to address the economy, and his proposal of his stimulus package offers a beacon of hope in hard economic times. For the sake of all Americans and people across the globe I hope that the stimulus plan is a success. If it is a success then the country can return to the economic prosperity of earlier times.

Another issue I feel is important is the discovery of alternate fuel sources, however I feel like we must also protect the environment. If we continue to use fossil fuels to run our lives we will destroy our planet and exhaust all of its resources. This is something we can not afford to happen and this is a something President Obama and his cabinet must look into.

Along with most people, I feel that right now the country's most important issue is the economic crisis that we're in. People including President Obama have said that this is the worst economy the United States has seen since the Great Depression. Many people are losing their jobs or being cut back on their amount of work hours significantly. This causes many families to suffer due to their decreased income. It also has an effect on other businesses. Since the people are getting less work, or none at all, they have little money to spend. Therefore the bigger companies are affected because they aren't getting as much business. When the economy is bad everyone is affected. Workers are worried about their job security and many are trying to find new jobs in order to support their families. With the economy decreasing as it is, one would think that the prices of everyday needs would go down; but they haven't. Gas prices dropped a great deal a little while ago but are on the rise once again. Also the cost of college is staying the same if not increasing in price. It may be very difficult for a family in a financial hardship to put a child through college. Some students are choosing to go to state schools so they cost of the education is decreased. The economic situation of our country needs to be handled soon. It will keep getting worse unless President Obama can solve this and get our nation through this hard time that we are experiencing right now.

Although the forefront of the American panic seems to be directly rooted in the failing banks and financial system of the United States of America, I believe that the main problem, and the most important problem that America faces today is its uncontrolled growth into a consumerist nation. Ever since the turn of the century, America has become a leading nation in technology, culture, media, fashion and service. This retailing of intangible objects, however, is no longer kept in check by our once powerful manufacturing enterprise. Due to uncontrolled outsourcing, America has essentially experiences halt in manufacturing and production. We have, in terms of a country, become similar to what society refers to as a "high maintenance" person; America remains in the foreground of the world, acting as the wealthy role model, however daily materials and the extravagant goods that we cannot live without are manufactured and imported from Nations such as Japan, China and India. Thus we become more and more dependent on foreign imports for both daily materials and our high maintenance gears. Unfortunately, in the process of becoming so dependent on imports, America as a nation becomes subjugated under the control of these nations from which we derive our resources and products. Nations can fluctuate their prices in any way they desire, and America becomes powerless in economically bargaining with foreign nations. Thus the uncontrolled outsourcing rates of American businesses and the excessively extravagant consumerist that define an American Citizen is the root of America's most recent economic fiscal.

I definitely think that the economic crisis is the more important topic. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have lost jobs, homes, and healthcare and I do not see this improving any time in the near future. Unfortunately I do not think that the economic stimulus will completely solve the problem. I do agree with Obama that creating jobs in schools, improving infrastructure, and improving energy efficiency, will greatly help the economy and also help improve the quality of life for Americans. Although I never thought that the grim economic state would affect me personally, I am now realizing the impact it is having on my family as we are making college decisions. I do not think that my college decision, or any one else’s, should be based on the price of the college. I would consider that my family is of the middle class, so I never thought that cost would impact my ultimate college decision.

I really think that Obama needs to put the stimulus into action in order to improve our economy. However, I do not think that the plan will work without tax cuts as well. With 600,000 jobs being lost in January alone, I think that something needs to be done to attempt to create new jobs and to also allow citizens to afford necessities. I am not aware if our country has put plans like this into action in the past and, if so, what the results were, but I can see that Obama is confident that this will be the first step of a long process to revive our deteriorating economy. Overall, I think that this economic plan is the most important topic right now.

In my opinion, the most important issue is the economic crisis. Never before have I felt so connected to the decisions the government is making. It was always so easy kept living my life without truely stopping to realize the significance of the what my country was facing. The Iraq War might have made me more aware, but it did not affect me. The economic crisis we now face, is and will continue to impact my life.
My dad is a financial adviser so to put in in simple terms, if other people loose money, he doesn't make as much. This has affected how much my parents can spend on things I enjoy doing. In the long run my dad's income will determine bigger things, such as what college I go to. The econonmic conditions are also effecting my relatives. For example, my uncle worked for Chrysler and recently was forced to leave because of the company's financial state. He is currently in the process of moving his family to Ohio where his new job is.
Listening to the president speak at the press conference made these issues even more real and pressing. To hear him say that this recession is the worst since the Great Depression, that millions of people are loosing their jobs and companies are being shut down, is frightening.

Another major issue that I think we should pay attention to is energy. We need to no longer be dependant on foreign oil. Part of this would be greater fuel efficiency and as Obama talked about, an "energy economy" aimed at creating millions of jobs. This issue goes hand in hand with the economic crisis as these jobs could help the economy as well as move us towards energy independance.

I believe that the war in Iraq is one of the most important issues facing our country today. I chose this topic over the economic crises because solving the issue in Iraq quickly and effectively will free up more money for the country and reduce spending. This issue also decides how are country is viewed through out the world, and solving it will go along away in helping ease relations in the middle east. While the economic crisis has overshadowed the war in the news lately, it’s important to remember that this is a very important issue that needs a solution. President Obama has created a carefully thought out plan for slowly receding from the Middle East. There are many skeptics to this plan, and I would like to discuss the advantages and disadvantages.

Tom H. said...

At this current time in our country's condition, the most important issue is no doubt the economic crisis. It is by far, the current U.S. issue that affects the country as a whole. It can also negatively affect our generation as well as the one preceding it. College decisions and jobs could be an issue if the economy isn't in any state to recover any time soon. I believe that President Obama's plan to turn around the situation could work or it could not work. It needs to be looked at as a double edged sword. It can either help the economy or hurt it.

Another issue that definitely needs to be considered is the war in Iraq. I believe this ties to the economic crisis. With all the money that is being wasted on the war, millions of Americans are either being laid off or left jobless. This conncection shows that progress in either issue can help the other.

Steve Kelly said...

It seems like the economic crisis is the most important topic at this time. Job loss seems to be a huge issue in this country and I cannot blame President Obama for comparing this crisis to the Great Depression. Millions of American jobs are getting sent over to foreign countries just because it is cheaper for a company. For example: my dad has been saying for a few years that the company he works for (IBM) is constantly sending jobs to other countries such as India, Brazil, and China. This creates a problem for American workers because it puts them out of a job. Finding jobs has become more and more difficult recently, which makes me believe that we will all be affected by this in one way or another. This is why I believe this economic crisis is an extremely important topic. If it wasn't important, I don't think Obama would have passed the Economic Stimulus bill so quickly.

Another area of concern is energy. There has been, for some years now, discussions about alternative energy sources. Solar energy, fuel cell technology, and hydrogen powered cars have been important topics. Many have become quite worried about America's dependence on foreign oil, and now there is a huge debate on whether we should drill for oil in northern Alaska. America seems to want to take serious action in finding different energy sources which leads me to believe that this is another important topic

In my opinion the economic crisis is the the most important issue of the united states. Until this problem is fixed people will continue to lose jobs and will continue not to spend their money. For the last couple of months the United States has been heading towards a depression like state. There has been a rise in unemployment and a decrease in spending. If this continues the problems will only get worse. Americans that have lost their jobs and Americans that had no job are finding it harder everyday to find new jobs. People are spending less because of this uncertainty. The decrease in spending causes more jobs to be lost. The American economy relies on spending because without spending there is no profit. The Economy needs its confidence back so America will continue flourish.
Other important issues would include new energy sources and the war in Iraq. A new energy source would mean that america would become less dependent on nonrenewable resources such as gas. This would also make car, planes, and other transportation vehicles more efficient. Also with the economic crisis at home i believe we should focus on our own economy and other at home problems rather than the war.

The economy is by far the most important problem that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. It is putting families on the streets, and causing many homes to become foreclosed. My neighbor’s house had to become foreclosed because of the economic crisis. Not only is that horrible for that family, but it affects our entire neighborhood because our house will be worth less money because of our neighbor’s poor financial decisions. This is happening all across America and it is affecting thousands of people. Obama is correct in saying that there need to be more job opportunity and money needs to be put back into the pockets of those who are most willing to spend it which will get the economy moving again. It will be absolutely horrific if we spiral into a depression. This country has been through one before, and I am surprised that we are heading in that direction again. If it happened before, it should have been prevented but this isn’t the case. I think Obama is the right person for this job. His new plan will create and/or save 3.5 million jobs, which is crucial to getting our economy back on track. Bush destroyed our economy, and Obama needs to fix it. Another aspect I agreed with in Obama’s new plan is the further research in more efficient ways of using energy. This will create jobs for many people as well as save the environment. Another good feature is to help the housing market. At one of my jobs, I help teach singing lessons by accompanying on the piano. Three families could not continue to do the lessons because they were in the real estate market, and one woman hasn’t sold a house in 6 months. Many families I know have put their moving plans on hold because they are scared no one will buy their house for a decent price. The status of our economy is shocking and it needs to be fixed. I believe Obama will solve this problem.
