Women's Roles in the Military

The Pentagon said Thursday that it would ease some restrictions on women serving in combat roles, a step that in part codifies the reality on the ground in Afghanistan, where commanders have stretched rules to allow women to support ground combat units."

Should women's roles be restricted in the 21st century US military?  Should females be required to register for selective service?

Women's roles in the military should be based off series of tests, both mental and physical, to see where they should be placed. When you hear of a woman going into the military, most people think they are going to be a nurse or in the infantry. Now a days many women are fighting right next to the men. The reason I feel women should have to pass a specifc test is because they need to be ready and most women are not like men. Mental tests should be given to see how the women thinks in certain situations. A physical test should be given because the women need to be in enough shape to run with extra weight, and to see how strong you are. Off of the tests that are given, they should then see what positions that women will go into or fit best in. If you are able to keep up or be better then the men you should be allowed to fight with them men. But if you struggle through the tests you should not be allowed to go into combat. Women can help and they do play a specific role in our military, but it should be tested to see a woman's true role in the military. I don't feel that women should have to register in to a selective service because it is their choice and what they are willing to do. Some women can do things men can't do.

In recent times women have been pressing to have a more and more active role in our military in that they want to have the opportunity to fight on the front lines next to men. If this is what women want for themselves then I believe that these women should have the opportunity to fulfill their wishes and do what they want. Obviously throughout history nearly all women have believed in and fought for equality with men, and did not want to be regarded as having a disadvantage in society. Allowing women to participate in combat in the military would be yet another way to increase their equality within society. Although I believe in giving women the opportunity to take a more active role in the military, I do not think that they should be required to be included in the selective service act. There is a huge number of women who would not be fit to serve in the military if their participation became a necessity, so requiring all women to put themselves into that possible situation would be wrong. As I said before, women who feel the calling to serve in the front lines in battle should have that opportunity because that is what they wish, but at this point in time the majority of women are not physically able to perform in the military as is expected. So in conclusion, women should be able to be enlisted in battle but should not be required to sign up for selective service.

Women's roles in the military should be determined by there skill not their gender. Women in the military should be chosen by what they can do and what their ability's are, rather than what there gender is. I also feel that they should be encouraged by the government to join because it would increase our number of troops and it might inspire other females to go into the military.

Women should have the right to serve in whichever branch of the military they choose with the same rights as men do. Women have the right to vote, they pay taxes, they hold executive positions, they serve in our government, and they should be able to fight for our county too.
Serving your country is a pure act of patriotism. Prohibiting women from fighting in combat to defend our country is wrong and discriminatory. We should allow our women to do as they wish and fight if they want to.
Along the same lines, I think women should be required to register for the selective services. In the off chance that a draft is necessary, men and women should both be fighting for our country. If a draft were to occur, and the young men of the nation were speedily claimed by war, there would be many problems with a lack of men as there were back in previous times of war. Mandating women to register for the selective services would allow for equal, or closer to equal representation of able men and women in the military.
(not to mention that men have to register for the selective services to receive federal financial aid and women don't, but should have to if they are recieving the same benefits as the men do).

I thinkit is a great step for America that women are being accepted into the military. This country was founded on the thought of equal rights, and if men are required to be drafted into the military, then so should women. However, most women do not have the physical strength to perform in some areas of battle. Therefore, while men get drafted into specific areas of the military, its only fair that women get drafted into areas that suit their skills. In today's day of war, I do believe that women should be required to enter into the draft as long as they are allowed to join the military. However, I also think that most women cannot succeed in certain sections of our military. The draft should limit them to areas that depend less on stature and strength of a soldier.

Women’s roles in the military are growing rapidly. There are more and more women joining the army everyday and because of this women should not have any restrictions. They should be allowed to work in position that they wish, however I think series of physical and mental tests should be mandated for the women to take before entering any position. There are several women, as well as men, that are just not cut out for certain positions but they should still have the chance to see if it is right for them. If the tests are not passed, then the woman cannot enter that work force and they can move on to another one. According to an article from “The Washington Post” women have not been allowed to be in direct war for several years now; “…the Pentagon has kept in place a prohibition on women serving in units whose primary mission is “direct” ground combat, such as artillery, infantry and tank units.” Seeing as though America has come such a long way with equality, this doesn’t seem like a good decision due to the fact that some women may work better than some men in “direct ground combat missions.” That being said, women should also be required to register for selective service. In the rare case of a draft occurring, women should have an equal chance of being able to fight for their country as men do. Also, if women’s roles don’t have any restrictions there is all the more reason for them to register for selective service because they can go anywhere.

The roles of women in the country have been changing and I believe that this must be shown in the armed forces. Women should have an equal opportunity to that of men in all areas, including the military. This does not mean that they would be able to have any assignment or role in the military, but they would have an equal opportunity to earn it. The roles should be chosen, not because gender, but because they person is the best for the job. There is a motion in that direction and I think it should continue. The reason that it is not a quick process is because the change is a large one and the military is a massive program. The change will take time, but I feel that it should happen. In addition to the change of allowing women to serve in all positions they fit, I think the change should be complete and require women to register to the selective service. The role of women in the military should not be restricted except by the strengths and abilities of the person.

Christine Acurantes said...

Women should have the same rights as men to be in the military. Gender discrimination has become a very overrated issue, and if women have proven effectivity and true potential, they shouldn't be hindered in reaching for the most there is to aim for ifever they qualify for it. (By this, I bring forward the ban from having women in the frontlines of a battle or bestowing upon them the responsibility of a high rank.) However, opportunity is different from duty. I believe that women should be able to register for selective service but shouldn't be required to do so. They should have the right of choice because women are the ones who bear children, the future of the country they are defending.

I strongly advocate for gender equality in all respects, but I also fully understand that infantry and combat roles require a lot more physically and mentally of a person. The statement that stood out to me in the article was regarding gender-neutral physical requirements: "Maybe only a few women would qualify, they said, but they should be allowed to try." I think that's the fairest thing to do. By making the physical requirement standard for any gender for any role in the military, they're leveling the playing field. Some women will past the test and some won't, just as some men would pass and other's wouldn't, but the point is that the soldiers are all of a high standard regardless of gender. If a woman is just as strong, just as dedicated, and just as physically and mentally able to handle a combat role as a man, she should be allowed to do so, no questions asked. The fact that the Army and Marine Corps ban women from serving in about a third of the positions sound quite primitive, really. Didn't we accept the fact that women can often do men's jobs back in the 1950's?
I don't really like the idea of the Selective Service, or the fact that it's mandatory for anyone. I'm tempted to say that women shouldn't have to register just because in a draft I personally would be terrified to have my name called in a lottery and told I had to go to war without being given a choice in the matter. However, I'd be just as terrified if any guy I knew—be it my friend, boyfriend, or cousin--heard their name called and had to go to war if they didn't want to. So I'm pretty opposed to the idea of mandatory selective service registry at all, I think it should be voluntary. That being said though, I think it should be voluntary for both sexes. Opportunities should be equal so that women at least have the option to serve if they want to choose it.

The roles of women in the modern-day society in America have evolved tremendously over the past couple decades from happy homemakers to powerful, independent citizens who are able to hold important positions in the country’s workforce. The new standards for women in America allow them to be in control of their own lives and make their own decisions, and they should be regarded as equals to men. Therefore, there should be no restrictions for their roles in the nation’s military. In today’s society, it is ridiculous to think that a woman should be banned from serving in roles in combat just because of her gender. If a woman chooses to make a sacrifice for her country and serve in the military, she should not be restricted, but applauded rather for her willingness to protect her country. However, that being said, women should have to meet the same requirements, both mental and physical, as men who serve in these military positions. If there is to be total equality in the military, there should be a universal standard for both women and men that qualifies them to serve in certain positions.
This also raises the subject of requiring all women to register for the Selective Service. Though I definitely would not want to be required to be part of a draft, I think that women should have to register in the Selective Service to guarantee that there is no gender discrimination. If women are to have equal opportunity in the military as men, they should not be withheld from the draft and should have the same requirements as men.

In the military there already are a large number of woman soldiers. They have many different positions and some are very decorated soldiers. Anyone who has to the ability to advance and or do the job better than someone else should be the one to do it. There are woman who are better soldiers than men and therefore just because of their gender they should not be excluded from certain positions. On page two it discusses the fact that some woman are not as strong as men. Although some woman may not be, there may also be woman who are stronger than men they should have the opportunity to try for a specific role if they are capable of doing it. Woman make up about 14% of the active military therefore if woman did not take an active part we would have many less soldiers why are these soldiers who are willing to risk as much as their male counter parts being excluded from what they along with their male counter parts have earned for themselves and proven themselves capable of. All people should be given equal chances. Excluding based off gender is just another form of discrimination which should be removed.

I believe that women should have equal rights as men in the military. I think that everyone is equal and if a woman is just as qualified as a man to hold a certain position in the military, there should be no rules against that. Looking at our armed services now compared to what it had been decades ago, I think that the military is doing a better job in terms of creating more diverse forces. I agree with Virginia S. Penrod when saying that it's a great step forward opening 14000 combat related positions to women. I think whenever our country wants to make such a big change, the change needs to evolve overtime in order to compromise with opposing views. Most people don't support change and the best way to transform our country into that change is step by step. When thinking about females being required to register for selective service I can see both sides. I don't believe society is ready to require women to serve in the military because we still have this view that women aren't as strong as men and a man should take care of a woman. Society just creates these views in our minds that men are stronger then women; we still hear jokes today like, "you fight like a girl." On the other hand, I do believe that some women are stronger then most men and gender shouldn't be a factor in deciding the requirements of selective service. I believe that if you are a citizen of the United States, no matter race or gender, you should be required to register. Everyone should have the right to fight for our country, especially if they want to, I don't see why anyone would want to restrict that.

Throughout the course of our history, women have been restricted from the opportunities open to men. As attitudes changed over the years, these opportunities have been opened up to women. Evidently, women have excelled and even surpassed men in these fields. So why then should women be restricted from many of the positions in the Army and Marine Corps? The primary justification for this situation has been the claim that women are not built for the stress of these combat-heavy roles. However, there are women that can meet the stress of these roles. Therefore, I am in support of a gender-neutal physical and mental requirements for these positions, as mentioned in the Washington Post article. Gender-neutral tests allow the military maintain a high standard for its soldiers while at the same time eliminating gender discrimination. . Though only a few women may meet these requirements, it is the chance to chase after these roles that is important. In fact, the inclusion of women in these roles is beneficial, as it provides support in these crucial areas. If a woman can meet the same physical and mental standards as male soldiers, then she should be allowed to serve since she is a solider of equal caliber.

Although I believe that women should be allowed to serve in combat roles, I believe that women should not be required to register for selective service. From swimming cuts to the physical requirements for entrance into the service academies, women have lower standards than men. From an anatomical standpoint, men are generally stronger than women due to a greater development of muscles. SInce selective service would apply to a large body of people, it is necessary to acknowledge this fact. Though women have succeeded in the military, they are still the minority. There are few who can handle the physical and mental stress of the military. For this reason, the selective service should only be required for male citizens.

Women’s roles should not be restricted in the 21st century U.S. military whatsoever. “Military officials have said that they keep many positions off-limits because most women don’t have the same strength as men.” (Washington Post) While it is scientifically accepted that in general men are naturally born with superior physical strength and ability, a soldier’s gender is completely irrelevant to his/her competence in carrying out an order or completing a task. The issue that is in question, whether or not women bare equal ability and the required endurance for the military as men, should not be the primary objective of the speculators and/or congress members who are currently discussing this problem. The dilemma that should be the one and only issue in question is whether or not the soldier is able to do what is asked of him/her. All applicants to the military should be put through the same training, both mental and physical, regardless of gender. If the trainee makes it through all of the prerequisites to being granted a military position, then their sex should not play a role in deciding what that applicant can and cannot do. However, while I maintain that women’s roles should not be restricted in today’s military, it is also understandable that while in a time of war, these changes in policy will take longer than desirable to come into full effect. Also, females should without a doubt have to register for selective service, especially if they are granted equal opportunities for roles in the military as men. Once again, if a commanding officer feels that one of their insubordinates is not meeting physical or mental expectations, they will not allow that soldier to go into combat, regardless of gender. It goes the same with the selective service act; there is no way to tell that every male registered for a draft is cut out for the military or is in the least bit more competent than every woman in that position. All in all, women’s roles should not be restricted in today’s military, but they should also be required to complete the same training and requirements as men and by law be obligated to enlist in the selective service act.

Woman's roles in the military should be allowed but selective. Woman should be tested mentally and physically. A woman wanting to go into the military must have a strong emotional tolerance, and the ability to reach the physical potential of males. I believe women should have to pass these tests because it's important to identify who can and who cannot survive through the hardest of conditions. Women have the tendency to become more emotional in situations and also sometimes have a hard time dealing with harsh gruesome situations. These tests will help determine if the women have the potential to survive the harshest of all situations. Being a woman myself I do strongly believe that woman should have the right to fight next to men to protect our country if they have the ability to do so. However, looking from my own view I cannot see myself or any other girls the ability to survive and protect during the situations that people in the military experience. Being exposed to these types of woman my whole life I have some doubts on if woman can really fulfill the same tasks as successfully as the men in the army. Women always tend to be more emotional, selfish, and are usually targeted more often because many males believe women are a weak link. If a woman has the ability to pass the appropriate tests to prove they have the ability to protect, and provide protection as males women should be allowed the opportunity to serve in the military.

I strongly support the push for women participation in combat roles. The fight for equality has been an ongoing struggle for women since the development of this country. Over the years women have gained suffrage, the right to divorce, and the right to own land. They have been determined and persistent in their fight to achieve equality with men. This demonstration of courage and drive alone ensures me that women have sufficient ability to perform effectively in military combat positions. Although many women may not have the physical strength to complete combat objectives or the mental strength to carry out missions at hand, America fails to consider the select females who are equally if not more capable of these roles in military. I believe that women should have the option to serve for their country and fight for there rights alongside men if they desire. The difference in genetic makeup between men and women can be utilized to complete specific objectives and will greatly benefit America's forces.
Although I support women involvement in combat military roles, I am opposed to the draft. I believe applying for the military should be voluntary and not forced upon an individual. No man or woman who is not mentally, emotionally, or physically ideal for military positions should not be required to serve or bring about the risk to serve. Only those that feel that are best fit for the military and can contribute to our country's forces should register for such a draft.

To say women can not have certain jobs in the military, I believe is a form of discrimination. While these limits are said to be placed to protect women, what instead they should be doing is to place limits on people in general. While men as a whole are stronger then women it is not always the case. Instead I believe there should be both a physical and mental test that places you. How well you do on the test limits to where you can be placed in the military. The tests would be both physical and mental to get the best judgement of who should be where. People would be into test simulations and ranked by their performance. Then there would be a physical test in which a certian number of miles must be run. Certian number of pushups ect. I believe this would be a much better way to judge weither someone is fit or not to serve a certian position.

Women's roles in the military have changed, sure, but they should be able to change more now. I think the country is able to handle women going into combat, which in turn could help our country anyways. Women who want to go into combat should be able to because they want to serve their country and not as a nurse, they want to fight for our country. They'd be trained in the same way that men would and would be able to do the same things that men can do, and the same thing with men that can't do it, they either put them in another position or put them out, all the same. Equally, women should be have to sign up for the draft too, because for equal rights its just what should be done so that women can be put into the military just as men do. Women can do just as much as men can for our country.

The role of women in the military has definitely been expanding in recent years, and I believe that it should continue to grow. Women should have the choice of entering any military branch that they choose. I think that they should have the same rights as men do when it comes to protecting their country, but, that also means going through what male soldiers experience. If they are mentally and physically strong enough to make it through training, then women should be given the right to fight next to men. Even though I believe that women should be given the same opportunity to be in the military as men, I don't think that women should be required to register for the selected service. While there are plenty of women that can handle being in the military, there are many women who would not fit in with the procedure of the armed forces.

Womens roles in the military should not be based on their gender, rather their skills. Women are looked at a physically inferior to men, but all of the women in the military today have to be pretty tough to have made it where they did. Womens roles in the military should be determined by physical and mental tests. I believe that women should be required to sign up for the selective service, because they are just as, if not more capable than men to perform identical tasks. This is my view on women in the military.

Right now, there is only a small fraction of the positions that are available for women. All positions in the military should be opened up to women. Women today are very active in society today, and they should be equally be given the opportunity to join the army. However, there should be no “curve” for women who wish to join. For example, if a requirement of the army for men is to run a mile in under seven minutes, women should also be forced to meet this requirement. I feel that this stipulation must be enacted, because war does not go easier on women. If women want to join the military, they must be just as qualified as their male counterparts.
Regarding the selective service, I think that women should also be required to register for the selective service. When women get drafted, however, I think that they should still go through the same tests or decide which position they would like to serve in. Alternatively, I would be fine with the selective service being only required for men, because it may be too complicated and controversial if women were required.

The right to fight on a battlefield should not be restricted by gender. We live in an egalitarian society, or at least one that likes to think of itself that way. We should we should live in a meritocratic and not a patriarchal society. This entails giving equal opportunity to women as well as men. However, this does not mean they should be allowed to serve without any qualification. Women should be subjected to the same tests and training as men, without giving any special treatment to them. If they can pass these tests as well as any man can then there should be no reason to not let them serve on the battlefield. If they however cannot pass the same tests, then they should not be allowed to serve because they may act as a hindrance to the unit and endanger more lives. Women should be given an equal chance, but it is up to them to rise to the challenge and qualify to serve like any man does.

Savannah Henderson said...

Recently, women have been more aggressive about their desire to become more involved in the military. Women should not be restricted to certain areas of the military- they should have the same opportunities as men when enlisting. It is obvious that men have more physical abilities than most women, however this stereotype should not justify limiting women who wish to become active in the military. Instead of placing restrictions on women, they should be tested for their abilities and placed in a suitable position that will not cause them to go beyond their own abilities (and therefore weakening that branch of the army). Our country is based off the idea that all people are created equal, so restricting women in the military would only contradict that universal belief. Also, placing limitations against women based on their gender is discriminatory, which our country is strongly opposed to.
However, I do not think that all women should have to register for the selective service. It is apparent that women are physically weaker than men, making males a more suitable choice for a draft if there were ever a time when our country needed to be protected. Women who wish to become involved in the military should be able to without any restrictions placed on them. But they also should not be forced to become involved when they are not the best fit citizens for protecting or country on the battle field. Women are needed more on the home front during times of war, protecting the families that are home and taking over businesses.

I think it is great that there are women out there who support their country and want to be able to do more. First off I think that having a draft for women would be a very poor idea. It takes a certain kind of woman to have the determination and mental toughness to serve on the front lines. Not just any female can be randomly selected to serve. Some changes and restrictions should be made. On the other hand, changes just cannot be made right away, especially in the middle of an on going war. So instead I believe that the U.S. Military should continue on with the progress they are making and take small steps to benefit the female fighters, but stay away from making any drastic changes like a draft for women. Also stated in the article was that men and women are segregated in basic training. Male and female should be required to pass the same basic training if they are going to be fighting on the front lines together.

I believe that serving in the military should not be based on gender but based on ability and training. Since these days military is an option and not a requirement, then woman should have every right and opportunity to be part of it.
In order to do so, I think there should be a certain physical tests that woman should pass and meet the same requirements as the man do.
If they are able to pass the same tests that the man do, then I don’t see a problem why woman shouldn’t serve in front line. But if there would be two sets of standards that are different for man and woman then I disagree, because if they can’t meet the same physical requirements of the job then they have no business of doing it, especially when other peoples lives will depend on them.

Latley, women have been pushing for a more prominent role in the military. I feel that they are justified in doing so. While phyiscally some women may be inferior to men, that doesn't mean that they can't be good soldiers. They go through training just as men do to get into the military, so clearly if they pass they are fit to do the same work as men in the military. Women should not be restricted in the military. Allowing them to serve in all areas not only breaks an important gender barrier but it also gives the military more numbers and capeable soldiers.
I don't think that women should be required to sign up for selective service. While they should have the right to serve in any area of the military if they so please, most women who do not go through the training are physically weaker than men which would make joining the military much more difficult.
Women should be free to serve in any area of the military if they wish to do so and serve along side the men, however, because they are physically weaker than men, women should not be required for selecitve service.

The only restriction women should have in the military should be decided after they have been through extensive training of both mind and body. This way you can see who is fit to serve on the front line and who is not. Once trained, I say let them fight since we are in the 21st century and women have proved themselves in the past. Women have fought for their rights to vote, to have fair job opportunities, as well as overall equality. This isn't much different. As well as fighting on the front lines to protect their country, women should also be required to register for selective service. We should all have to serve for our country disregarding your sex. Overall, women should be able to serve front line as well as register for selective services.

I believe that every person should be equal to one another. Men are not superior to women, so why are there so many restrictions in the military? Although there are multiple differences between men and women, we are all built the same. I, personally, would never want to fight in the military (for my own reasons). However, there are some women who actually want to fight in the military. It's simply wrong and a little sexist for women to be excluded from some positions in the military. Military officials explained that they have these restrictions because some women are not as strong as some men. In some cases, that's true. But, what about the women who are strong enough and/or stronger? Also, women can train for these military positions until they are fir enough to perform the job as well as a man would. Women should at least be given a chance to try out for theses restricted positions which right now only men can apparently do. Men and women should go through a physical, mental, and emotional test. If the some women do as well as the men, then there's not argument for why they can't become a part of such off limit positions. Since men and women should be treated equally, women should also be required to register for selective service. If all 18 year old boys have to register, so should the girls. Right now joining the military is voluntary because we don't have a draft going on right now. I think it is honorable for any man or woman to join the military. If a woman meets all the necessary requirements, she should be able to be a part any position in the military.

Women’s role in the military has changed over time, but there is still a prohibition regarding women serving on missions with direct combat. There are many men and women that can’t physically or mentally handle working on the front lines, which is why both genders should be equally tested to see if they are qualified for the field that they have chosen. If the requirements are not met, then they can be directed towards a different position. Therefore, women should not be restricted from any role in the military today unless they are not qualified.
I also believe that women should be required to register for Selective Service. Once the women are selected for draft, they should be tested physically just like the men are tested and placed in the field that they are most qualified for. The opportunities for positions should not be limited because they are female. There are many women who are more physically and mentally fit than men. The best person should be chosen for the job and that person could be the women who has just gotten drafted.

Recently, women have been fighting the Pentagon to gain equal rights as men with being involved in the military. Although they have made great progress in such a short amount of time, they still believe they deserve the same options and positions as men receive in the military. In my opinion, women should have the same options as men, as long as they meet the same qualifications. "Women in the Army and Marine Corps face the most job restrictions, with each prohibiting them from serving in about a third of its positions." These areas are two of the most physically demanding for even men to be in, which is why women face difficulty being with allowed to join. And although they should not be discriminated against due to their gender, they should meet certain physical requirements to prove that they do have the ability to keep up with the men around them, or to show they can’t. Either way, it shouldn’t be predetermined by the Pentagon, instead based upon each individual woman.
As previously stated, not every woman has the same abilities, just like not every man does. But men are still required to sign up for selective service, while women are not. This, in my opinion, is unfair because women are fighting to receive the same rights as men in the military but not one of them is fighting to be “forced” to join the military. Therefore if they want to prove they have the same abilities as men, women should also be required to sign up for selective services.

To this day the Women's Rights movement is still in progress with women continuing to work for equal rights in all areas of life. Until reading this article I was actually unaware of the positions that women now hold in the military. I believe that women deserve equal rights with men because over the years they have proved to be able to perform up to the same standards as men. Women should be allowed to at least try for the same positions as men. In some cases the women could be able to perform better than men in some positions in the military. Most tasks are mainly mental and if a women can pass those tasks such as the Navy SEALs Hell Week then she can do anything. I read a lot about the Navy SEALs and from what I have learned, anyone who gets through that training can just about do anything. Looking back on the past, Women have made great strides in fighting and winning rights to do things that they were not previously able to and I think that it is only a matter of time before they are allowed to apply for any position in the military. They are already allowed to apply for a majority of the military positions in all branches as the article said. If they are able to pass the physical and mental tests that are required then they should be allowed to be in any military position.

Personally I feel like this is a very widely discussed topic and peoples opinions tend to vary greatly based on their own values. When it comes to restricting women's roles in the military I think that this is a major equality issue and should be treated as such. A lot of women are very adamant for equality between males and females so if women want to be truly equal to men in all ways then they should be held to the same standards as men are in the military. So for restricting women's roles in the military I feel that if they want to be able to join any branch of the military that men can they should prove that they are both as physically and mentally fit as males who are currently in those military positions. In regards to being required to register for selective service I feel the same way; if women want all of the same rights and equality as men then they should be held to the same standard as men. So the bottom line is that if men have to register for selective service than so should women.

As a girl, you would think I would be all for women in the front line, but I am not. Women may work just as hard as men, and may even be smarter than them, but in the end it is about strength in the front line. Hand to hand combat is a physical and mental test, but mostly physical. Men surpass women in many physical tests, as quoted in the article, "Military officials have said that they keep many positions off-limits because most women don’t have the same strength as men." It may be difficult to make such a important decision, but in order to keep our troops and country safe, we have to take the best odds in our favor.
For the woman filling out a draft card, I am all for it. Men and women are equal, even though it is "tradition" for men to go to war over women. It has been the women that have improved our tactical war and even helped on the battle field. If you have gone back into history women have saved men's lives as nurses, and now doctors. They have saved men in the emergency room, and can now save them on the battle field.

Women's role in the military should be based off there skills, and not there gender. I strongly believe that women who are risking their lives to protect us and keep us safe should most definitely be able join the military. Now according to The Washington Post since 2001, around 280,000 women have been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. Having said that Defense Department statistics had said that 144 of them have been killed, and 865 have been wounded. Having 280,000 women being deployed greatly increase the strength in our military even thought 144 of them have been killed and 865 have been wounded. I think that women should be able to do just as much if not more then men even if that means joining the military, army or whatever it is that they want to do. Giving women the chance to join any branch of the service is one more step to women having and being able to do what all men can do. It also greatly increases and inspires thousands of women to join the service witch means twice as much more help. Now to join the military or any other branch you have to train and pass all the tests, if men can do that why not women? Theres nothing wrong with women wanting to help the people of America, and have he/she doesn't pass the test then like every other man or women they keep trying until they get in. In conclusion i 100% agree with the fact of women being able to join the military. It greatly increases the strength in the force, women receive more rights that allow them to do what they want, and it inspires many other women to join.

Women's role in the military has been increasing over the years, and I am all for women in this country being able to serve in all parts of the military. However, most women do not have the physical and mental strength required to perform on the front lines, but some do. This is why I feel that women should be given the chance to prove themselves worthy to serve alongside men on the front line. You don’t want to put someone who is not capable of performing in a life or death situation because they are a liability to themselves and the people they are serving with. This is also why I feel women should not have to sign up for the selective service. Like I said before not all women could handle war situations. Women interested and joining the military should do it on their own. I believe that women should have a right to serve with men in the military, just as long as they can perform with the men and not become a liability.

Women's roles in the military should be allowed. I believe that women's roles in the military should be based on whether they are able to complete the skill successfully or not. I do not think it should be based on gender. I know a lot of women that go into the military today and they love being apart of the fight for our country. Women should have the right to be able to serve in whatever branch they chose to. I think that if men should be drafted, then women should be too to a certain extent. Women have equal rights to men; military is just another issue that should remain equal between the two genders. I believe that a test should be conducted so that they know what the strengths are of some women. For example, there should be physical and mental tests. The military would need to decide who would be ready for combat and who needs to remain in training. Also, they would need to make sure the women are emotionally ready to fight. I do fully believe in women being able to be apart of the military, but at some extent. The women need to be ready and understand the task that they have to complete. I do not fully agree with selective service because I would not want anyone I know being drafted in the military that did not want to go, but if they are going to have a selective service for men, they should have it for women too at some extent as I have stated above. The selective service or the draft should only be for those who are ready to be strong enough to fight for our military while protect and defend our country. Some men and women would not be able to perform well in the military and that would need to be taken into consideration. Men and women have equal rights; they should have equal rights in going into the military. I strongly believe that women should be able to be fighting right next to men for our country. If the gender, whether it is male or female is mentally and physically ready they should be able to go into the military. Therefore, women's rights in the military should be equal to men's rights.

Persistent effort of women in 1900's to have equal right enabled nowadays Women to pursue what they want to do. If selective service is included in this category, women's right should be expanded to militaristic aspect too. For Women who strongly eager to fight in frontline with guys, right to register for selective service needs to be guaranteed for them. As long as an examination proves that certain women has physial and mental shape which makes them eligible enough to participate in frontline, Women also should opportunity to serve in selective service as Guys do.

We live in what is supposed to be a more and more open society; slowly but surely, we are seeing issues such as gay marriage, women's health, and others be affirmed on the side of the individual. Even if the change comes gradually, and even if the opposition is very active, I think that the general trend in American law and culture is to be more accepting of the rights of the individual. In line with this, I see no reason that the military should restrict the role women in the modern era. Instead, requirements for most military occupations should become unisex, a standard “bar” that all candidates must surpass before consideration. I realize that the jobs will not change when the applicant pool opens up, so women must be expected to pass the same intelligence tests, graduate from boot camp, and undergo all the same training that a man in the same situation would have to. Even if the rigorousness of the physical requirements for same jobs precludes a larger percentage of possible female soldiers than males, it is only a fair tradeoff if men and women are to be held as equals. Once this baseline achievement level is set, all military roles could be opened to both genders, with the knowledge that all soldiers who pass the tests have proved themselves capable. As long as there are women willing to fill these roles, with both the physical and mental capabilities expected of a male soldier, then there should be no rule holding back their advancement in the military.
As for Selective Service, I am a little more divided in my stance. I do not like the prospect of Selective Service, and the reinstitution of the draft is a concept that, while unnecessary in the face of our entirely volunteer military force, still scares me to a small degree. Putting this aside, however, if women are to be integrated into the military on a widespread basis, and will be afforded the same opportunities as an entry-level male would have, then they should be required to register for Selective Service, even if it is on a more restricted basis. For instance, the age range may be reduced, or exceptions could be made for those who are married, are pursuing advanced degrees, etc. Although this change would mean that a majority of the adult population of the United States will be registered, it is only fair and equal if women are to fill a larger role that they also register more widely. In this situation, additional precautions would have to be taken, of course; were the draft to be reinstated, the military would have to have procedures in place so that two parents couldn't be drafted simultaneously, leaving their children stateside and alone. Nevertheless, opening Selective Service to women ought to come with the general opening up of the military.

In my opinion, gender does not really matter when it comes to the military. It doesn’t matter if you are a male or female. What matters is the ability to do what is required. Yes some women won’t be able to do it but there are definitely men who are nowhere near capable of doing what is required of him. Plenty of women are strong physically, mentally, and emotionally. If they are able to do that and show commitment and dedication without backing out, then gender really doesn’t matter because men do the same thing. For selective service, I am not in favor of selective service, especially since that it is a mandatory thing and that if your name is called, then you are being deployed. For males and females, it would be best if it were to be voluntary instead of mandatory. There should not be any drafting what so ever.

Ever since the sexual revolutions that took place around the same time as Civil Rights protests in America, women have always tried to have a more important role in society to prove their value. Recently a debate has risen over whether or not women should be given more important combat roles in the military instead of just hanging on the sidelines. I as a general whole believe that men are mentally and physically built better for physical warfare, although women are more than capable at creating military strategies. Women essentially have all of the rights that men do in life including the military, and I don't see why they would want to put themselves on the front lines if they don't have to. Although men are generally accepted as being better "fighters," I believe that women should be given mental and physical aptitude tests to figure out where they belong when they serve, whether it be on the front lines or in a hospital, because these tests would show where they would do a good job serving.

I believe that gender shouldn't matter when being apart of the military. Men and women should have the same opportunity when it comes to protecting our country. They should have to go though the same tests and training and be chosen for their skill and not their gender. Women can be as much help in protecting our country and keeping it safe as men do.

The status of women's roles within the military has changed greatly over the course of America. I personally believe that women's roles within the military should be based off of the mental and physical skill level of that particular women. Although many women would be successful in most of the branches that men work in, not all of them would. That is why I feel it would be important to have a number of physical and mental tests on how well any particular women would do in that branch. However, I don't think that women should be required register for selective service. I feel that any women who is willing to join the military at all should be allowed to pick were they work. However, women physically are not built the same as men. That is why I think that there should still be some restrictions in which field they decide to work. Overall, I think that a women's roles in the military should be valued just as any other person male or female who is fighting for the greater good of their country.
