The Right to Bear Arms

BLOG IS DUE THURSDAY EVENING! I WILL SEE YOU TOMORROW.

2nd AMENDMENT
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed."
Does the 2nd Amendment give all Americans the right to bear arms? To what extent can the government limit this without "infringing" on teh Second Amendment?

  1. Can the government place limitations or restrictions on gun ownership? Under what circumstances?

  1. What events in our recent past have fueled the gun debate? School shootings? Home invasions?
  1. What are the arguments for and against limiting the right to bear arms?
2 POVs

"It's precedent-setting. It's the first time the Supreme Court has commented on this in decades," said Sheri Anne MacNeil, 30, of the District, who is with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "It's monumental."

On the other side of the gun ban issue was Don Pollock, 67, a retired military special operations officer from Bowie. "This is the big one. The court finally gets to review the terrible [gun] laws of the last 70-something years."

You must advise President Obama or a current Republican candidate on a policy for immigration reform.  How should he/she address both the numbers entering and the legal status of those currently in the US?  How do we secure our borders?  Make sure you support your proposals with evidence from the video clips and news stories linked to this site.

Women's Roles in the Military

The Pentagon said Thursday that it would ease some restrictions on women serving in combat roles, a step that in part codifies the reality on the ground in Afghanistan, where commanders have stretched rules to allow women to support ground combat units."

(Note to viewer.  The use of these images would indeed be in violation of SOPA)

What is SOPA (No solamente "soup" en Espanol)?  How would it effect YOU?

Well, most Americans now Google or head straight to Wikipedia for the answers to the universe, and the following is what they have to say.
Wikipedia
Google

Other explanations and POVs.
CNN/Money
Washington Post

Questions to answer:
1.  Why was SOPA proposed?
2.  Who are the main supporters?
3.  What are the main provisions (parts) of the bill?
4.  Why are companies like Wikipedia and Google so opposed to SOPA?
5.  What does this debate reveal about competing interests and the power of competing interest groups?
6.  What other questions do you have?  How might you find answers?
